The Grosvenor love affair with Australian wines, was sparked off more than 40 years ago as the result of 12 months practical winemaking experience in Western and South Australia in 1960/61, primarily spent in the Barossa Valley, 10 years after initial training in Oppenheim am Rhein and Geisenheim, where Riesling had dominated most working days.
Following four years working through many of the worlds vineyards across four continents, riding a Zündapp 200 cc over 100.000 miles around the world between 1958 to 62, Garry Grosvenor returned to England via the U.S.A., and joined International Distillers and Vintners. In 1970 they transferred him to Germany, and it was here that he imported a first container of Australian wines, a hazardous undertaking in those days when virtually nothing was known here about the wines from Downunder.
In 1980 Garry and his wife Marlies left I.D.V. to launch Grosvenor Winebrokers in Germany, as exporters of German estate wines and importers of Australian premium wines.
Rhein and Mosel Riesling exports flourished following the spectacular trio of vintages 71, 75 and 76, with sales soaring, particularly in the U.K., U.S.A. and Japan. In the 80's the Grosvenor's decided to strengthen their involvement with premium Australian wines by introducing the spectacular qualities produced by Thomas Hardy of South Australia, and Houghton Wines of Western Australia.
Acknowledged by the wine trade and press as pioneers of Australian wine imports to Germany, the Grosvenor's extended their import portfolio to include Andrew Garrett, Tatachilla, Ross Estate, Gapsted of Victoria, Glaetzer Wines, Hewitsons and Inghams Skilly Ridge plus several boutique producers, all of which they introduced to the German market, backed by the growing enthusiam and involvement of Marlies Grosvenor for more than 25 years until cancer tragically cut short her life early in 2006.
Grosvenor Winebrokers philosophy has always been to offer the best available price/quality relationship, seeking out those remarkable premium and super premium vintages which have so enhanced the reputation and popularity of Australian wines worldwide, to become many of the most prized and sought after in the entire world of wine.
Thanks to their superlative quality,
